August 21st

Dear Brother Cheslock:

My best thanks for sending me the Present Truth. I already receive it regularly, but extra copies, of course, have their uses. I became converted to the Seventh Day Adventists' eschatology months ago, and I am now thinking of reading for holy orders. How people can go about with light hearts in the face of the fact that the end of the world is upon us is more than I can make out.

Sincerely,

[Signed by H. L. Mencken]

DescriptionLetter from H. L. Mencken to Louis Cheslock dated August 21, [1929]. Mencken thanks Cheslock for sending a copy of the Present Truth, a Seventh-Day Adventist periodical and writes in a bantering tone when he tells Cheslock that he's thinking of taking holy orders. Dr. Cheslock (1899-1981) was a Professor of Music at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He would later join the Saturday Night Club, where he played the violin. He and his wife, Elise, became close friends with Mencken and his brother August. The Cheslocks and the Menckens were especially close during the years after Mencken’s stroke. In 1961, Dr. Cheslock edited H. L. Mencken on Music.
