DescriptionPhotograph of an illustration that appeared on page 25 of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper (1855-1922) of September 30, 1865, depicting the arrival of a group of African American freedmen and their families at Baltimore, Maryland. According to the written account, this scene repeats itself daily, especially in the southeastern area of the city, where ships dock. They have come with all of their belongings in every type of cart or wagon pulled by horse or mule. In the upper right corner of the illustration is a sign reading Provision Store, where flour and grain (not visible in photograph) are sold; on the left (not visible in photograph) is a sign for a ship chandler's store.
