| Description | Photograph of an illustration entitled "A Southern Oyster Peddler" by B. West Clinedinst that appeared on page 173 of Harper's Weekly of March 2, 1889. This illustration depicts an African American oyster peddler in Baltimore, Maryland. Wearing a white apron over his suit and carrying ladles and two metal cans of oysters, he stands in front of a stone archway. Beneath the archway and behind the oyster peddler is a well-dressed older couple walking arm in arm away from him. Behind them and just to the right is a gentleman walking toward the peddler. On the far right is an African American woman standing on stairs, holding onto a wooden railing. At the time of this illustration, the oyster industry with its depots and express wagons was making the oyster peddler's way of life obsolete, and he was rapidly disappearing from Baltimore's streets. |
