DescriptionPhotograph of an architectural sketch showing the southwest façade of the old Frederick Douglass High School at North Calhoun and Baker Streets in Baltimore, Maryland. Prepared by Owens & Sisco Architects [Benjamin Buck Owens (1841-1918); Spencer E. Sisco (1875-1951)], the sketch was used in the building of this four-year African American high school, which opened in 1924. The supervising engineer was Henry G. Perring (1881-1946), Chief Engineer of the City of Baltimore during the first administration (1919-1923) of Mayor William F. Broening (1870-1953). In 1954 this building was closed, and a new building, constructed at number 2301 Gwynns Falls Parkway, was opened. Graduates of the old Frederick Douglass High School include such notables as Cab Calloway (1907-1994), Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993), and Clarence Muse (1889-1979).
