DescriptionPhotograph of the John Eager Howard Room at the Belvedere Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. Named in honor of John Eager Howard (1752-1827), the Revolutionary War hero and politician who originally owned the land on which the hotel is located, this room reflects the hotel's 1935-1936 renovations. Chandeliers of Bohemian crystal imported from Czechoslovakia and the dark paneling convey a subdued elegance said to reflect what Howard's guests at "Belvidere" (sic), his own home, would have experienced. Seated around the room are guests enjoying the music provided by Sidney Bawsel (1907-1943) at the spinet organ (center). Standing by the window (left) is an African American man who appears to be waiting tables. Behind and to the right of the organist is a large fireplace with a massive mantle stretching to the ceiling. In the mantle's center, on loan to the hotel for its 1936 reopening, is the portrait of Howard painted by Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827). Around the walls are murals painted by O. Verna Rogers (1903-1989) of scenes of old Baltimore taken from early works of art. On the east wall left of the mantle and continuing on the other side of the window is the mural taken from "East View of Baltimore, " drawn by G. Beck, engraved by T. Cartwright, and published January 1, 1802 by Atkins and Nightingale. It depicts Baltimore probably from a hill near Frederick Road in West Baltimore. Right of the mantle is part of the mural taken from "Foundry on the River Jones" (also known as "Foundry on Jones' Creek near Baltimore"), drawn by J. Milbert, lithographed by Bechebois, and published by H. Dangain before 1820. On the far left north wall is part of the mural taken from "Jones Falls Near Baltimore, " painted by J. Shaw and engraved by J. Hill before 1820.
