| Description | Map of Maryland by Samuel Lewis, dated 1795, that shows eighteen Maryland counties: Anne Arundel (spelled "Ann Arundel"), Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick (spelled "Frederic"), Harford, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George's (referred to as "Prince George"), Queen Anne's (spelled "Queen Ann's"), St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, Washington, and Worcester. An inset shows the continuation of the Potomac (here spelled "Potowmac") River from Fort Cumberland in Western Maryland, and Baltimore and Washington D.C. are conspicuously identified by clusters of black markings in their respective geographical locations. Along with Dennis Griffith, Samuel Lewis would be the first to map Maryland's newly reduced boundaries after the creation of Washington D.C. from twenty square miles of land cupped in a fork of the Potomac River: ten miles surrendered from Maryland and ten miles surrendered from Virginia to create a capital city for the nation. |
