| Description | Original etching by Leon Louis Dolice inscribed to George Cator, Esquire that features the William Wallace Monument in Druid Hill Park. This statue was given to the city by William Wallace Spence and unveiled on St. Andrew's Day in 1893. It is reported that this statue is modeled after the one that is atop the Abbey Craig near Sterling, Scotland. According to William Sener Rusk's book, Art in Baltimore: Monuments and Memorials, the base of the statue is made of "Woodstock granite, thirteen feet high, and the statue above is slightly more than thirteen feet. Wallace is clad in armor, and stands with his sword upraised and shield at his side. He is supposed to have appeared thus watching the fateful battle on the plains below Sterling. The statue was sculpted by D. W. Stevenson, a member of the Royal Academy of Scotland. The inscription on the base of the monument reads, "Wallace Patriot and Martyr for Scottish Liberty 1305." The etching is signed and is one of twelve Baltimore etchings by Dolice, a European artist who visited the city in 1924. See also print numbers 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, and 18 to see additional work by Dolice. |
