DescriptionOriginal etching by Leon Louis Dolice inscribed to George Cator, Esquire that features the Watson Monument located across from the Maryland Institute, College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. The Watson Monument, located near Mount Royal Avenue at Lanvale Street, was erected by the Mexican War Veterans in 1903. It commemorates the leadership of Colonel William H. Watson and the Marylanders who joined him in giving their lives in the battle of Monterey during the Mexican-American War. The statue of Watson stands atop a tall pedestal and shows the Colonel holding his drawn sword at his side. The inscription on the monument reads "Watson Memorial to Marylanders killed in war with Mexico 1846-7-8 erected by the Maryland Association of Veterans of Mexican War 1903." The etching is signed and is one of twelve Baltimore etchings by Dolice, a European artist who visited the city in 1924. See also print numbers 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 to see additional work by Dolice.
