Description	Map shows plans of the city of Mahón and the fortress Castillo de San Felipe on the island of Minorca, one of the Balearic Islands near the coast of Catalonia. Inset map shows a plan of Fort St. Philippe, as it was called by the French, at the time when it was fortified by the Spaniards in 1706, and the city wall. The castle was designed by Italian architect Gianbattista Calvi in the 16th century at the orders of king of Spain and Aragon, Felipe II. After its recapture from the English in 1782, the castle was mostly demolished on orders of king Carlos III. Port Mahón is one of the world's finest natural harbors and was of particularly strategic importance during the eighteenth century wars between the English and French navies in the Mediterranean. It is the capital and principal seaport of Minorca, tracing its origin to ancient times. Since 1802 Minorca remains part of Spain. Printed on two plates and joined together. Published in Nuremberg by Homann Heirs. The Homanns became leading map printers after a long period of Dutch domination in the 18th century in Germany. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) established his firm in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Continuing its business under his son, Johann Christoph (1703-30), the company was then bequeathed to family heirs under the condition to use the name Homännische Erben, i.e. Homann Heirs.
