Transcript	Baltimore Jan 9 / 71 Dear Neilson Will you please send me the remains of my fortune. I presume you are not sorry that I have done troubling you. Tell Josephine hers was the only Christmas gift I had, and for which I thank her very much. Give my love to all , Affectionately Maria Clemm.

Description	In this brief letter dated January 9, 1871 and written from Baltimore, Maryland, Maria Clemm asks Neilson Poe to send the remainder of her fortune. She also asks him to give her love to his children and to thank his wife, Josephine, for the only Christmas present she received. Mrs. Clemm tries to make light of her monetary situation, but her words seem a desperate cry for help. She will die before the end of February at Church Home, where she has lived since 1863.
