Transcript	Baltimore Sep 14, [18]63 Dear Sir I left Ohio more than 5 months [ago] and have been in the "Church Home" in this city. I wrote from Ohio to my old rector Dr. Wyatt to use his influence to obtain admission for me in the "Widows Home" in this place, which he can do, but I must pay $150 on going there, this I cannot do without the assistance of a few friends, I now write this to ask you to aid me even in a small way. I have heard thru the Rev Mr Rankin of your presence in the city. The ladies of St Paul[']s Church pay a high board for me here. The managers are nearly all the children or grandchildren of my old friends, they take a great interest in me, and this is why I wish to remove the obligation by going where I will be cared for the rest of my life. I would be very much pleased to see you and Josephine here, all my relatives and many old friends visit me. I hope you will reply to this[;] if you do, direct to me "Church Home" Broadway, Baltimore . Respectfully Maria Clemm

Description	In this letter dated September 14, 1863 and written from Baltimore, Maryland, Maria Clemm informs Neilson Poe she is now living in the Church Home on Broadway in Baltimore. Although her stay is being paid for by the ladies of St. Paul's Church, she tells him she would like to relieve them of this obligation by moving nearby to the less costly Widows Home, a home for elderly widows where she would receive lifelong care. Because the entrance fee is $150, which she does not have, she asks Neilson for his help. "Josephine" is Neilson Poe's wife . (Editor's note: The date of this letter has variously been given as September 19, 17, and 14, 1863. Based on a comparison of the numbers written in other letters by Maria Clemm, September 14, 1863 appears to be the correct date. Also, on the back or reverse side of the letter is a handwritten note probably added by an archival worker at a later time. It reads: "Maria Clemm letters to N. Poe.")
