DIX'S MANIFESTO
Air. - "Dearest Mae."
Once on a time in Baltimore,
There reigned a mighty King;
Of gallant deeds he did a few,
As we will shortly sing.
Chorus - Come jolly Rebels listen,
While we a song do sing,
Of all the noble deeds just done,
By John A. Dix, our King!
Our "Lord and Master" hearkened,
On one September day,
And boldly swallowed all the lies,
His minion Dodge could say.
Chorus - Come jolly Rebels, &c.
Next day he straightway ordered
All infants caught at play
With "Rebel colored" sacks on,
"To the Fort" should take their way.
Chorus - Come jolly Rebels, &c.
On Barbers' poles, and Mint stick,
He did his veto place;
He swore that in his city,
He'd "Red and White" erase!
Chorus - Come jolly Rebels, &c.
On Ladies' bonnets "Red and White,"
Should forever base their places;
Or else his valiant (?) Dodgers
Should scratch the ladies' faces.
Chorus - Come jolly Rebels, &c.
He swore that even Heaven,
Against him now did plot;
For "Red and White" in sun-sets,
He vowed made him feel hot.
Chorus - Come jolly Rebels, &c.
But cheer up gallant fellows,
The time is quickly coming;
When after Dix the "Red and White,"
In triumph will be running!
Chorus - Come jolly Rebels, &c.
