KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That I, Eliza Ann Bennett of the City of Baltimore and State of Maryland, for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars, lawful money of the United States, in hand paid by David L. Maulsby at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged : HAVE granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents DO grant, bargain and sell, unto the said David L. Maulsby his Executors, Administrators and Assigns, a Negro Girl by name Philis supposed to be between thirty eight and forty years of age, about 5 feet high and a dark mulatto A Slave for Life
TO HAVE and TO HOLD the said described Negro Girl unto the Said David L. Maulsby his Executors Administrators and Assigns forever; and I the said Eliza Ann Bennett for myself my Heirs, Executors and Administrators, the said described Negro Girl unto the said David L. Maulsby his Executors, Administrators and Assigns, against me the said Eliza Ann Bennett my Executors and Administrators, and against all and every other person or persons whatsoever, shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents. In Witness Wherof, I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal, this third day of September Eighteen Hundred and Forty five
Signed, Sealed and Delivered in the presence of Ann Eliza Bennett [SEAL] City of Baltimore SS. Be it Remembered, That on this third day of September 1845, before the Subscriber, a Justice of the Peace for said City personally appears Eliza Ann Bennett and acknowledges the above Instrument of Writing to be her act and deed, according to the true intent and meaning thereof.
