THIS Indented BILL of FOUR DOLLARS, shall entitle the Bearer to receive Bills of Exchange, payable in London, at the Rate of Four Shillings and Six-pence Sterling per Dollar for the said Bill, according to the Directions of an Act of Assembly of Maryland. Date in ANNAPOLIS, this 1st Day of January, Anno Domini 1767 . R Couden J Clapham
Description	Obverse of a Maryland four dollar note dated January 1, 1767 and signed R [Robert] Couden and J [John] Clapham. The serial number (1095 [0" is best guess) and signatures are handwritten in what appears to be brown ink. Marks meant to discourage counterfeiting include a caret under the word "the" in the text (third line from bottom) and a lowercase epsilon in place of the letter "c" in the words Directions and Act. Positioned to the right of the central text is an engraving of the Maryland seal. Below the seal is the Latin inscription Crescite et Multiplicamini, which means Increase and Multiply . (Editor's note: One wonders why the motto Crescite et Multiplicamini was chosen, since the official motto on the Calvert family coat-of-arms, on which the seal was based, was Fatti Maschii Parole Femine, i.e., Strong in Deeds, Gentle in Words.)
