(No 21714) This Indented Bill of ONE DOLLAR, shall entitle the Bearer hereof to receive Bills of Exchange payable in London, or Gold and Silver, at the Rate of Four Shillings and Six-Pence Sterling per DOLLAR for the said Bill, according to the Directions of an Act of ASSEMBLY of MARYLAND. Dated in Annapolis, this Tenth Day of April Anno Domini 1774 . J [John] Clapham W [William] Eddis
Description	Obverse of Maryland one dollar note dated April 10, 1774 and signed J [John] Clapham (left) and Wm [William] Eddis (right). The serial number (21714) and signatures are handwritten in what appears to be brown ink. A mark meant to discourage counterfeiting is a lowercase epsilon used in place of the letter "c" in the word Directions. Centered on the front of the note below the upper border are two engravings: a Spanish milled dollar between two pointing hands (first line of text); and the seal of Maryland (between the rest of the text). Below the seal is the Latin inscription Crescite et Multiplicamini, which means Increase and Multiply . (Editor's note: One wonders why the motto Crescite et Multiplicamini was chosen, since the official motto on the Calvert family coat-of-arms, on which the seal was based, was Fatti Maschii Parole Femine, i.e., Strong in Deeds, Gentle in Words.)
