Description	Document 130 pages long that contains the report of the Committee on Fire-Resistive Construction of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Established in 1896, the NFPA publishes fire and building safety standards designed to help reduce the worldwide burden of a fire's damaging and devastating effects. Four days after the fire swept through Baltimore the Committee began inspecting twenty-seven buildings to ascertain the effectiveness of the fire-resistive technologies that had been used in Baltimore City buildings that were still intact after the fire. This report of the Committee details where the fire started and how it spread as well as the factors that had made containing the fire so difficult. The fire started in the basement of the John E. Hurst and Company building located at the southeast corner of Liberty and German Streets and quickly spread through the other six stories of the building by means of an elevator shaft. An unexpected explosion on one of the upper levels blew out the windows and ignited several buildings nearby. It only took about a half hour from the time that the fire started for it to grow to a point that it was out of control. For each of the twenty-seven buildings studied this report provides such details as the construction of the building, the nature of its exposure to the fire, and the damage sustained and includes some photographs and diagrams. The report concluded that many features and practices of the construction of fire-resistive buildings were faulty, made a variety of recommendations for improvements, and provided a list of requirements for fire-resistive construction.
